How much power do you need? ~ New infographic highlights the importance of considering batteries early in the design process

International battery manufacturer Accutronics has created an infographic for portable device designers that outlines the importance of battery consideration during product development. The infographic is available for download from Accutronics’ website.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) often overlook batteries during the design and development of their product. This has a negative impact later in the process when they turn to off-the-shelf batteries that don’t adequately provide the performance they want.
Many factors have to be considered when selecting a battery for use, particularly in the medical, military and test and instrumentation industries, where Accutronics is most active. To achieve optimal performance for both battery and device it is vital that the designer selects the correct cells to optimise key features, such as capacity and cycle life, for the specific application and prevent cell obsolescence during the life cycle of the product. Custom batteries normally provide the best possible solution, although if battery choice is addressed early enough, it is often possible to save money by
selecting a pre-engineered but customisable professional battery, such as Accutronics' Entellion range.
Accutronics’ infographic allows OEMs to visualise the standard of performance they could achieve by considering custom batteries at each stage of the process.
“Despite being ostensibly one of the simplest components in many products a battery can also be one of the most misunderstood,” explained Neil Oliver, technical marketing manager at Accutronics. “Perhaps because of the frequency with which new battery technologies make the news there is a multitude of misconceptions about which technologies can realistically be applied in a low volume, professional or industrial application.
“As battery and charger designers, we work within strict limitations and there is often a conflict between the energy needed by the application or specified by the OEM and the amount that is possible within the physical constraints of the design. By consulting battery manufacturers earlier in the design process, OEMs can tackle this and help guarantee a longer product life cycle.”
